WEEE compliance fee: how it should work

Overview

We’re asking for views from those affected on proposals for a Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) compliance fee methodology. These include:

• producers
• Approved, Authorised Treatment Facilities (AATFs)
• Producer Compliance Schemes (PCSs)
• local authorities
• waste management companies
• re-use sector

Following the 2013 consultation on changes to the UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) system, we began implementing the new WEEE system. This incorporated a collection target and a compliance fee that PCSs may choose to pay if they fail to achieve their target.

Earlier this year  interested parties submitted proposals on how the compliance fee should work.

What happens next

Responses to this consultation will be considered as part of the formal evaluation process of the proposed methodologies.

Any compliance fee methodology and compliance fee scheme operator approved by the Secretary of State will be announced by mid-February following the compliance period to which the compliance fees will be applicable. This will allow sufficient time for Producer Compliance Schemes to pay a compliance fee as appropriate and include evidence of payment with their Declaration of Compliance by the deadline date of 31st March.
