Draft National Policy Statement for fusion energy generation (EN-8)

Overview

This consultation seeks views on the draft National Policy Statement for fusion energy generation (EN‑8), which sets out the government’s proposed planning policy framework for fusion energy infrastructure in England and Wales. The draft statement forms part of the wider suite of energy National Policy Statements and will guide decision-making on development consent applications for nationally significant fusion projects. The government has identified fusion as a strategic priority for the UK’s clean energy future, and as the sector moves towards commercial deployment, a clear and consistent planning framework is needed to support appropriate development.

The consultation focuses on the content of the draft EN‑8 and supporting environmental assessments. It invites views on whether the proposed framework provides a clear, coherent and proportionate basis for assessing fusion energy infrastructure. The government welcomes responses from members of the public, industry, academia, non-governmental organisations and other interested parties to ensure the final policy is robust, evidence-based and supports the safe and effective development of fusion energy in the UK.

See GOV.UK for the consultation document and associated materials.
